Sandra Shotwell, Ph.D.

Sandra Shotwell is a Founder and Managing Partner of Alta Biomedical Group, a consulting firm specializing in technology commercialization. Her clients at Alta Biomedical Group include both early-stage and established companies, as well as research institutions and non-profit organizations.

Sandra has over twenty years experience in technology management on behalf of U.S. and international research organizations and corporations. She has done extensive license negotiation, developed business strategies, worked with numerous start-up companies, and managed technology and research administration. Her technology management experience includes positions at Stanford University and the European Union’s Joint Research Center. Sandra established the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Technology Licensing Branch, where she directed licensing for the NIH, the Centers for Disease Control, and the Food and Drug Administration. She served as Director of Technology and Research Collaborations at Oregon Health Sciences University, with responsibility for technology licensing, company spinout formation, research grants and contracts and company-sponsored research. While at OHSU she assisted in the creation of six new spinout companies. She continues to serve clients in the area of early stage technology

Sandra currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Oregon Bioscience Association, the International Sustainable Development Foundation and the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment tool. She has previously served on the Boards of Virogenomics, Inc., the Stanford OTL Gap Fund and the Association of University Technology Managers. She is active in the Licensing Executives Society, and the Association of University Technology Managers.

Sandra did her undergraduate work at Princeton University , earned a Ph.D. in Biology from the California Institute of Technology, and did postdoctoral research in Neurobiology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
